Ten armed robbers armed with a pistol, axes and knives raided a home in Hope Fountain, Bulawayo, on Monday night, assaulting a 50-year-old woman and stealing US$1,700, three cellphones and a Toyota Hiace.

The gang, which was reportedly wearing navy blue work suits, allegedly ambushed the woman and her family at about 7pm before demanding cash.

Bulawayo police deputy spokesperson Assistant Inspector Thandekile Ndlovu said the woman was assaulted with an axe handle during the robbery.

“The accused persons assaulted the complainant at the back using an axe handle whilst demanding for cash. They ransacked the house and took US$1 700 which was in the purse on the bed, three cellphones and car keys,” she said.

The robbers then took a silver Toyota Hiace, registration number AFA 0634, which was parked inside the yard, and used it as their getaway vehicle.

A police report was made following the incident, and investigations are currently under way to identify and arrest the suspects.

Police have urged members of the public to avoid keeping large amounts of cash at home and instead use banks or other reliable financial institutions.

Assistant Inspector Ndlovu also urged vehicle owners to install tracking devices, saying they could assist in the recovery of stolen vehicles.

Anyone with information that could assist police in identifying the suspects or recovering the stolen Toyota Hiace has been urged to report the matter at the nearest police station.

Police are continuing with investigations into the robbery and the whereabouts of the stolen vehicle remain unknown based on the information provided.
