Chinhoyi University of Technology has announced the death of Panashe Mwnga, a young graduate who completed her studies in Visual and Communication Multimedia on 28 August 2025. She died in a road accident the same evening, just a day after her graduation.

According to a statement issued by the university’s Students Representative Council (SRC), Mwnga was travelling with her sibling and parents near Mapinga, close to Gwebi River, when the accident happened.

She sustained serious injuries and, despite medical efforts, passed away a few hours after being admitted to Parirenyatwa Hospital.

Her body has since been transferred to Nyaradzo Funeral Services for burial arrangements. The SRC described her death as “a profound loss to the university community and to all who had the privilege of sharing in her journey.”

In solidarity with the Mwnga family, the SRC has declared 1 September 2025 as Black Monday. Students are encouraged to wear black on that day as a sign of mourning and respect. “We encourage all students to wear black on this day as a sign of collective mourning and respect,” wrote Marvlin Saint Madanda, the Minister for External Affairs, Information and Publicity in the SRC.
