Convicted rapist Anymore Zvitsva has been sentenced to 89 years in prison after being found guilty of rape, attempted murder and robbery charges.

Zvitsva, aged 35, appeared before Harare regional magistrate Francis Mapfumo where sentence was delivered following his guilty plea to all 10 charges brought against him.

The convicted offender was facing four counts of rape, five counts of attempted murder and one count of robbery linked to a series of violent attacks committed in Raffingora and Guruve last year.

Last week, Zvitsva pleaded guilty to all the charges and accepted the facts presented by prosecutors before the court.

Court proceedings heard that several victims were attacked using weapons including machetes, knives and wire during separate incidents that occurred in different parts of Mashonaland Central Province.

In one of the cases presented before the court, prosecutors said Zvitsva entered the room of a woman in Raffingora while armed with an Okapi knife and wire before threatening her, tying her hands and legs and dragging her into nearby bushes where he raped her.

The court heard that after the assault, the victim was stabbed and left injured at the scene. Prosecutors also detailed another attack involving a 62-year-old woman from Guruve who was allegedly assaulted with a machete before being raped and left unconscious.

Another complainant was attacked while walking home from Kachuta Business Centre. The court heard that the victim was struck on the head with a machete before being strangled with wire and robbed of personal belongings.

During sentencing, the court considered the seriousness of the offences, including the violent nature of the attacks and the injuries suffered by victims during the incidents.

The sentence means Zvitsva will spend decades in prison following his conviction on all counts of rape, attempted murder and robbery.

The case attracted public attention due to the number of offences involved and the violent circumstances outlined during court proceedings before magistrate Mapfumo.
