Hollywood star Danai Gurira made a special trip back to her roots on Friday, October 23, visiting her former school, Dominican Convent High School in Harare. The actress addressed the learners, urging young women to work hard, embrace their African heritage, and take charge of telling African stories on global platforms.

Gurira reflected on her journey from the school's corridors to international stardom, sharing how her upbringing in Zimbabwe provided the foundation for her success in the US entertainment industry. She encouraged the students to value their backgrounds and remain confident in their identity while pursuing their ambitions.

Born in Iowa, USA, Danai Jekesai Gurira moved to Zimbabwe in 1983. After attending Dominican Convent, she returned to the States to study at Macalester College and the Tisch School of the Arts.

Her professional rise began in 2004 with Law & Order: Criminal Intent, followed by the award-winning play In the Continuum. She later achieved global fame as Michonne in The Walking Dead (2012–2020) and as Okoye in Marvel’s Black Panther.

During the visit, Gurira emphasized how her Zimbabwean education grounded her, giving her the confidence to represent African perspectives in Hollywood.

Dominican Convent High School expressed their gratitude for the visit, stating: “We are grateful to Danai for sharing her journey and inspiring our young ladies to pursue excellence, embrace their heritage and confidently shape the future in whichever fields they choose.”
