An 85-year-old caretaker is recovering in hospital after surviving an axe attack in Kensington, Bulawayo, in what police have described as a case of attempted murder.

Provincial police spokesperson Inspector Nomalanga Msebele confirmed that the incident took place on August 10 at around 5pm.

According to police, the elderly man was in his room at the plot where he works when the suspect, a woman known to him by face, entered and demanded  intercourse.

Inspector Msebele said the caretaker refused the woman’s request, prompting her to take an axe from inside the room and strike him once on the right side of the neck, leaving a deep cut.

Despite his injuries, the victim managed to call for help. Authorities responded quickly, and an ambulance rushed him to hospital for treatment. His current condition has not been disclosed.

Inspector Msebele urged members of the public to avoid violence when dealing with disputes. “As police, we urge the public to resolve disputes peacefully and avoid violence,” she said.

Police have since launched a manhunt for the suspect, who fled the scene after the attack.

“We appeal to anyone with information that may lead to the arrest of the suspect to report to the nearest police station,” Msebele added.
