BREAKING:

Former Zimbabwe captain Elton Chigumbura has been appointed head coach of Uhuru Cricket Club following a major coaching reshuffle announced by Takashinga Cricket Club on Wednesday.

Chigumbura, who recently guided Takashinga 2 to the National Premier League title, leaves the side after helping establish it as one of the strongest talent development teams in Zimbabwe domestic cricket. The former Zimbabwe all-rounder now begins a new role at Uhuru as the club prepares for the ongoing domestic cricket season.

The 39-year-old will work alongside assistant coach Nigel Mupurura and team manager Chamu Chibhabha, another former Zimbabwe international. The appointments are part of wider structural changes within the Takashinga set-up aimed at strengthening both senior cricket and junior development programmes.

Takashinga confirmed that Erick Chauluka has been appointed overall head coach. He will work with Takashinga 1 together with assistant coach Stuart Matsikenyere and team manager Keith Kulinga. The club said the changes are designed to improve the structure of its cricket operations across all levels.

Takashinga 2, previously coached by Chigumbura, will now be led by Nobert Manyande. He will be assisted by Ngonidzashe Mutasa as the team continues preparations for the domestic cricket campaign.

The club also announced new coaching appointments for Under-17, Under-15 and Under-13 teams for both boys and girls. Takashinga said the latest changes support its long-standing commitment to youth cricket development and creating opportunities for young players.

Over the years, Takashinga Cricket Club has played a significant role in Zimbabwe cricket by producing and developing several national team players. The club’s development system has become one of the most recognised pathways for young cricketers aiming to reach professional level cricket in Zimbabwe.

In a statement released on Wednesday, Takashinga thanked Chigumbura for his contribution during his time with the club. “We are grateful to Elton for his service to Takashinga and wish him well in his new endeavour,” the club said.

Chigumbura’s appointment at Uhuru now places attention on how quickly the club can improve its performances during the current domestic cricket season. His experience as a former Zimbabwe captain and his recent success with Takashinga 2 are expected to be important for Uhuru’s ambitions.

The latest developments also highlight continued movement within Zimbabwe domestic cricket as clubs focus on strengthening coaching departments, player development systems and long-term cricket structures. Coaching appointments, youth development and club restructuring continue to play a major role in shaping the future of Zimbabwe cricket.

Takashinga’s latest restructuring exercise comes at a time when domestic cricket teams are working to improve competitiveness and strengthen talent identification structures. The club’s decision to appoint coaches across different age groups reflects an effort to maintain consistent player development from junior to senior cricket.

For Uhuru Cricket Club, the arrival of Chigumbura represents an important addition ahead of the remainder of the season. With the domestic competition already underway, attention will now turn to how the former Zimbabwe international adapts to his new environment and whether he can help make Uhuru more competitive in domestic cricket.
