Patrick Chiziri, 26, has been sentenced to 18 months in prison for escaping from Hurungwe Prison. Chiziri fled while working at a cattle kraal but was recaptured the same day along the Harare-Chirundu Road following a tip from an anonymous caller.

A 26-year-old inmate has been sentenced to 18 months in prison for escaping from lawful custody after fleeing from Hurungwe Prison while serving a sentence for unlawful entry.

Patrick Chiziri, of Muzari Farm in Mutorashanga, was recaptured on October 11, 2026, after prison officers launched a search following reports that an inmate had been seen in the Karuru area.

According to a bulletin issued by the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ) on October 28, Chiziri had been serving a 12-month custodial sentence at Hurungwe Prison when he escaped while deployed to work at Langham cattle kraal.

The bulletin states that the escape occurred at around 0700 hours on October 11. Chiziri allegedly fled the area while working at the cattle kraal, prompting a search for the missing inmate.

“At around 0800 hours, a prison officer received information from an anonymous caller who reported having seen an inmate in the Karuru area,” the NPAZ said in its statement.

A search team was subsequently deployed from Hurungwe Prison at around 0900 hours to locate the escaped inmate.

The search ended at approximately 1300 hours when officers recaptured Chiziri along the Harare-Chirundu Road, near Moy Farm in Karoi, on the same day he escaped.

He was later brought before the Karoi Magistrates’ Court, where he was convicted and sentenced to 18 months’ imprisonment for escaping from lawful custody, according to the NPAZ bulletin.

The new sentence follows his original 12-month custodial sentence for unlawful entry. However, the bulletin does not specify whether the 18-month sentence will run concurrently with or consecutively to the original sentence.

The case highlights the criminal consequences of escaping from lawful custody. The NPAZ warned that inmates who attempt to escape from custody face prosecution under the law.

“The NPAZ wishes to remind members of the public that escaping from lawful custody is a serious criminal offence,” the authority said.

It added that those who attempt to escape would be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.

The authority also commended members of the public who report suspicious activity and encouraged communities to continue cooperating with law enforcement agencies to help keep communities safe.

The recapture followed information provided by an anonymous caller, which prompted prison officers to organise a search. The NPAZ did not disclose further details about the caller or the circumstances surrounding Chiziri’s escape.

Chiziri’s case demonstrates that escaping from prison can lead to an additional criminal conviction and prison sentence, even when an inmate is already serving time for another offence.

The public’s role in reporting suspicious activity can also assist authorities in locating people who have escaped from lawful custody. In this case, information from an anonymous caller prompted the search that led to Chiziri’s recapture.

However, the case details provided by the NPAZ do not establish whether any prison security procedures were breached or whether disciplinary action was taken against prison staff. Those issues should not be assumed without further information from the relevant authorities.

The prosecution serves as a reminder that lawful custody carries legal obligations and that an escape can have further consequences for an inmate’s period of imprisonment.
