BREAKING:

Zimbabwe Women’s cricket captain Mary-Anne Musonda has announced her retirement from all formats of the game, bringing an end to her international playing career.

The 34-year-old last played for Zimbabwe during the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 held in Abu Dhabi.

Musonda had initially been sidelined by injury after the tournament, but has now confirmed she will not return to competitive cricket.

Her departure marks the end of an important chapter for Zimbabwe Women, where she served as captain and one of the team’s senior players.

In announcing her decision, Musonda said retirement was influenced by several factors, including the physical strain of elite sport and a new personal outlook.

“From the outside it might seem like there’s still more left in the tank – and, in many ways, there is,” she said.

“But this decision wasn’t only about performance or ability. It was a combination of timing, perspective and physical reality.”

Musonda said growing older made her reflect on the long-term demands placed on her body through top-level cricket.

“At 34, I became more aware that it wasn’t just about whether I could keep playing, but whether it was sustainable to keep asking my body to operate at that level over and over again,” she said.

Her comments suggest the decision was based more on long-term wellbeing than any immediate loss of form.

Musonda has been one of Zimbabwe’s best-known women cricketers and played a leading role during key periods for the national side.

She represented Zimbabwe in both One Day International and T20 formats and was regarded as an experienced figure within the squad.

Her leadership role also made her central to the development of younger players entering the national team system.

Zimbabwe Cricket has not yet announced who will permanently succeed her as captain.

Her retirement comes as women’s cricket continues to grow globally, with Zimbabwe seeking greater competitiveness on the international stage.

Musonda now says she is ready to move into the next phase of her life after years in professional sport.

Her exit leaves a leadership gap but also creates space for a new generation of players to emerge.

Tributes are expected from teammates, supporters and cricket officials following the announcement.
