BREAKING:

Zimbabwe has called on countries with nuclear weapons to end strategic rivalry and focus on shared global security, warning that the continued growth of nuclear stockpiles remains a serious danger to humanity.

The appeal was made by Defence Minister Oppah Muchinguri-Kashiri during the General Debate of the 11th Review Conference of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons at United Nations Headquarters on Monday.

Speaking on behalf of Zimbabwe, Muchinguri-Kashiri said modernising and expanding nuclear arsenals may increase military capability, but does not remove the risk of total destruction.

“Enhancing and modernising nuclear arsenals may strengthen offensive capabilities, but it does not eliminate the certainty of mutually assured destruction,” she said.

She said any nuclear conflict would bring devastating humanitarian and environmental consequences that would affect countries far beyond those directly involved in war.

“In the event of a nuclear war, catastrophic humanitarian and environmental consequences would affect every corner of the world,” she said.

Zimbabwe also reaffirmed its support for international peace, security and efforts to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons.

The minister used the platform to highlight Zimbabwe’s campaign for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council for the 2027 to 2028 term.

“Zimbabwe is determined to serve on the United Nations Security Council in order to contribute more actively to the promotion of international peace and security,” she said.

Zimbabwe is seeking election to the council in voting expected in June this year.
