HARARE – A 26-year-old Harare car salesman has appeared in court after allegedly gambling away US$5,500 entrusted to him by his employer.
Kelvin Menyani appeared before Harare magistrate Ruth Moyo earlier this week facing a charge of theft of trust property. He was not asked to plead.
Prosecutors told the court that Menyani had been sent to collect US$7,000 from a client who had purchased a trailer from his employer, Efiat Kodoya.

According to the State, Kodoya had sold the trailer for US$7,100 last Thursday while he was out of the country. He allegedly instructed Menyani to deliver US$7,000 to his wife in Newlands and keep US$100 as a reward.
The court heard that Menyani collected the money from the client but failed to deliver it as instructed.
Kodoya reportedly discovered that the cash had not reached his wife after contacting her. He then tried to get hold of Menyani, but the employee allegedly became evasive.
On Saturday, Kodoya contacted Menyani’s father after failing to locate him.
Relatives later found Menyani at MWOS in Mabvuku, where he was allegedly placing bets. By that time, only US$1,500 of the money had been recovered.
The matter was subsequently reported to the police, leading to Menyani’s arrest.
Menyani remains before the courts, where he faces allegations of theft of trust property. The allegations are yet to be tested in court.
