ZIMBABWE international Joey Phuthi has completed a move to English Northern Premier League side Whitby Town after impressing during a successful pre-season trial.
The 21-year-old earned a contract with the Seasiders after catching the eye of the club’s technical team with a series of energetic performances in training and pre-season matches.
Born in Harare, Phuthi came through the academy ranks at Sheffield Wednesday after relocating to England as a youngster. His progress saw him sign his first professional contract with the Championship club in August 2023 before making his senior debut during the 2023/24 season against Coventry City. He also featured for the Owls in the FA Cup.

Capable of playing as a winger, wing-back or full-back, Phuthi has also represented the Zimbabwe senior national team since making his international debut in 2024.
After spells with Eastbourne Borough and Cleethorpes Town, the versatile youngster now hopes to establish himself at Whitby Town ahead of the new Northern Premier League season.
Whitby Town manager Lee Bullock said the Zimbabwean had deserved his opportunity after a strong pre-season.
“Joey has done really well throughout pre-season and has earned this opportunity. He brings energy, pace and quality to the squad, and we’ve been impressed with both his attitude and willingness to learn. We’re pleased to welcome him to Whitby Town and look forward to working with him this season,” said Bullock.
An excited Phuthi believes he has found the right environment to continue his development.
“I’m happy to have signed and I’m happy to push on. It’s a good group of boys and the staff and fans have been really welcoming. It’s nice when you come into a place and they make you feel welcome straight away,” he said.
