BREAKING:

Multiple homicide suspect Zvitsva appeared in court this morning following a request by the State as legal proceedings in the case continue.

The State informed the court that Zvitsva recently underwent a mental examination and was found fit to stand trial before the regional court. Prosecutors said the assessment confirmed that the accused is mentally capable of understanding court proceedings and standing trial on several rape and attempted murder charges he is facing.

According to the State, the outcome of the mental evaluation has now opened the way for the matter to proceed formally through the courts.

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) indicated that it is initiating proceedings on the non-third schedule offences after indications emerged that the accused may plead guilty to some of the charges.

Court proceedings focused largely on the State’s application and the findings contained in the psychiatric assessment report. Prosecutors maintained that the accused was now in a condition to proceed with trial processes in accordance with the law.

The case has drawn public attention because of the seriousness of the allegations facing the suspect, including multiple homicide, rape and attempted murder charges.

No further details were immediately provided in court regarding the timeline for trial proceedings or when the accused is expected to formally enter his plea.

The matter remains before the courts as the prosecution continues preparations for the next stage of the case.
