A 49-year-old man from Masundunza Village in Nkayi has been sentenced to an effective 15 years in prison for raping his 14-year-old niece, who has a mental disability, the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ) has reported.

The Bulawayo Regional Magistrates’ Court handed down the sentence after convicting the man of the offence, which occurred in March 2026. According to an NPAZ bulletin dated 16 October 2026, the victim was near her home, herding goats, when her uncle approached her and sexually assaulted her.

The man, who comes from Masundunza Village under Chief Madliwa in Nkayi, reportedly grabbed the girl and forced her to the ground before raping her. After the assault, he threatened her against disclosing what had happened. The bulletin did not provide further details about the circumstances surrounding the assault or the identity of the offender.

The case came to light after the victim’s sister noticed that the 14-year-old was pregnant. The discovery prompted questions, during which the girl disclosed that she had been raped. A police report was subsequently made, leading to the man’s arrest and eventual conviction in court.

The victim’s age and mental disability were among the details highlighted in the NPAZ bulletin, which emphasised the need to protect children who may be particularly vulnerable to sexual abuse and exploitation. The authority did not provide further information about the child’s current condition or the arrangements made for her care following the discovery of the pregnancy.

The court sentenced the man to an effective 15 years in prison. The bulletin did not specify the individual components of the sentence or indicate whether any portion had been suspended. It also did not provide details of any additional court orders made in connection with the case.

The offence was reported to have taken place in March 2026, while the NPAZ publicised the conviction and sentence on 16 October 2026. The bulletin did not state the exact date of the assault, the date of the man’s arrest or the date on which the court delivered its judgment.

In its statement, the NPAZ reiterated the importance of protecting children, particularly those who are vulnerable, from sexual abuse and exploitation. The authority called on members of the public to report cases of child sexual abuse to help ensure that perpetrators are brought to justice.

The authority’s statement also highlighted the importance of reporting abuse rather than allowing such cases to remain undisclosed. In this case, the offence came to light after a family member noticed the girl’s pregnancy and the child subsequently disclosed what had happened. The police report then led to the offender’s arrest and conviction, according to the bulletin.

The case adds to the criminal matters publicised by the NPAZ as part of its work communicating court outcomes and promoting the protection of children. The authority’s message was that members of the public have a role to play in reporting sexual abuse and ensuring that cases reach the relevant authorities. The man’s effective 15-year prison sentence was the outcome reported by the NPAZ following his conviction by the Bulawayo Regional Magistrates’ Court.
