BREAKING:

HARARE – Scottland and Herentals recorded important victories on Sunday to move into a four-way tie at the top of the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League standings as the title race tightened further.

Scottland defeated CAPS United 2-0 at the National Sports Stadium to climb onto 28 points and join CAPS United, Herentals and Hardrock at the summit of the table.

The match also served another purpose beyond league competition, with the sports ministry using the fixture to test facilities at the National Sports Stadium as renovation work continues to align the venue with FIFA requirements.

Scottland took control of the match through the influence of Khama Billiat, who created the opening goal. Billiat provided the assist for Knowledge Musona, allowing Scottland to take the lead before halftime.

Panashe Mutimbanyoka added Scottland’s second goal before the break to complete a dominant first-half display and secure all three points.

Herentals matched Scottland’s result with a hard-fought 1-0 away victory over FC Platinum at Mandava to strengthen their position in the title battle.

The decisive moment came in the first half when defender Nickson Nyasulu’s attempted clearance inside the penalty area went wrong, allowing Liyeto Dreamer to move in behind and finish past goalkeeper Raphael Pitisi.

Elsewhere, Highlanders returned to winning ways with a 2-1 victory over Hunters. Andrew Mbeba delivered a free-kick that was headed in by Marvin Sibanda in only the second minute to give Highlanders an early advantage.

Benjamin Adeogun increased Highlanders’ lead in the 63rd minute before Eli Elunga scored in stoppage time to set up a tense finish. Benjani Mwaruwari’s side held on for victory and remain six points behind the leaders on 22 points.

Hardrock had moved level at the top on Saturday following a goalless draw away at MWOS, but Sunday’s results created a four-team battle for first place heading into the next round of fixtures.

Other results across the weekend saw Dynamos defeat Ngezi Platinum 2-1, ZPC Kariba beat Chicken Inn 1-0, Telone edge Agama 1-0 and Simba Bhora draw 1-1 with Triangle United.
