Varun Beverages Zimbabwe will begin importing and distributing Carlsberg beer in Zimbabwe on September 20, marking the first phase of a partnership with Danish brewing company Carlsberg ahead of planned local production next year.
The rollout will introduce the Carlsberg brand to Zimbabwe’s beer market, where Delta Corporation is the leading brewer. Varun already has an established presence in the country’s beverages industry through its soft drinks manufacturing and distribution operations.
The arrangement forms part of a broader agreement between Varun Beverages Limited and Carlsberg covering the sale and distribution of the brewer’s products across Africa. Zimbabwe has been identified as the first market in the phased rollout.

Varun Beverages Zimbabwe chief executive officer Vijay Kumar Bahl said the company would use its distribution network to make Carlsberg products available to consumers across the country.
“Over the years, Varun Beverages Zimbabwe has built a strong, multi-layered route-to-market and distribution network, supported by people, infrastructure and execution capabilities, reaching customers across the country,” Mr Bahl said.
“We now look forward to putting that distribution strength behind a globally recognised beer brand and bringing it closer to Zimbabwean consumers,” he said.
The September 20 launch is the first stage of an agreement that is expected to move to local manufacturing once Varun completes construction of its planned brewing facility.
Varun has earmarked US$250 million for the establishment of the brewery in partnership with Carlsberg. The investment is expected to create at least 2 500 jobs across the value chain.
Mr Bahl previously described the distribution agreement as the first step towards a wider expansion strategy that could see Zimbabwe become an important manufacturing base for the Carlsberg brand.
“Varun Beverages Ltd signed a sale and distribution agreement for beer with Carlsberg for Africa, including Zimbabwe as the first phase. In the second phase, manufacturing will be done in Zimbabwe with the successful launch of beer in the local market,” he said.
The new brewing plant is targeted for completion in 2027, after which production is expected to shift from imported products to beer manufactured locally.
The partnership will also extend competition between Varun and Delta beyond the soft drinks segment. Varun has built its position in Zimbabwe through soft drinks manufacturing and distribution, while Delta has traditionally dominated the beer market.
The initial distribution phase will give Varun and Carlsberg an opportunity to establish the brand in the domestic market while preparations for local manufacturing continue.
Economist Stephen Chifamba said the partnership could have benefits beyond the beverages industry by attracting additional international investment into Zimbabwe.
“Varun’s partnership with Carlsberg could attract further international interest in Zimbabwe’s beverages industry, reinforcing the country’s position as a regional manufacturing hub for Southern Africa,” he said.
The planned brewery could also position Zimbabwe as a potential export base for Carlsberg products destined for regional markets.
For Varun, the project represents an expansion from its established soft drinks business into beer. For Carlsberg, the partnership provides an established distribution network through which it can enter the Zimbabwean market as part of its wider African strategy.
The investment is also expected to create opportunities for local suppliers and service providers once manufacturing begins. The local production of beer could increase demand for agricultural inputs, packaging materials and other products used across the beverages value chain.
The September 20 distribution launch will therefore mark the first visible stage of the partnership before the planned transition to local production.
With the brewery targeted for completion in 2027, the project is expected to bring Carlsberg manufacturing to Zimbabwe while expanding Varun’s operations into the beer segment.
