BREAKING:

A 33-year-old Warren Park businessman has appeared at the Harare Magistrates Court facing allegations of raping his cousin after allegedly intoxicating her with beer.

The accused, whose name was not immediately available in the report, appeared before Harare magistrate Marehwanazvo Gofa.

The court heard allegations that the businessman gave his cousin beer before allegedly engaging in sexual intercourse with her without her consent.

The matter was brought before the court after the woman reported the alleged sexual assault to the authorities.

The accused is facing a rape charge. Under Zimbabwean law, rape involves sexual intercourse with a woman without her consent where the accused knows that she has not consented or realizes there is a real risk that she has not consented.

The allegations have not yet been tested in a full trial, and the accused is presumed innocent until proven guilty.

Magistrate Gofa remanded the businessman in custody and advised him to apply for bail at the High Court, according to NewsDay.

The case will proceed through the courts as the State considers the allegations against the accused.

The development comes amid continued cases involving sexual offences being brought before Zimbabwean courts.

Police guidance states that people who have been sexually abused should seek medical attention and report the matter to the police.

Further details of the case are expected to emerge as proceedings continue.
