BREAKING:

YouTube says it will begin automatically detecting and flagging AI-generated content on its platform in a move aimed at improving transparency for viewers as artificial intelligence tools become more advanced.

The Google-owned video platform announced the change on Wednesday, saying it would no longer rely entirely on creators to disclose whether they used generative artificial intelligence in their videos.

“If a creator doesn’t specify whether or not they used AI, but our systems detect significant photorealistic AI use, we will now automatically apply a label,” YouTube said in a blog post.

The decision marks a shift from the company’s earlier policy introduced in 2024, when creators were asked to voluntarily disclose content produced using artificial intelligence tools.

Since then, generative AI technology has developed rapidly, making it easier to create highly realistic images, audio and videos that can be difficult for viewers to distinguish from human-made content.

Among the AI tools now widely available are Google’s Veo 3.1 and Seedance, developed by TikTok parent company ByteDance. The platforms are capable of generating photorealistic video content using artificial intelligence technology.

YouTube said creators would still have the opportunity to challenge labels placed on their content if they believe the system has incorrectly identified their videos as AI-generated.

The company also said the new labels would not affect how videos are recommended to viewers through YouTube’s algorithm. According to the platform, the automatic detection system is intended to improve transparency rather than reduce the reach of content creators.

YouTube joins a growing number of digital platforms introducing automatic AI-content labelling systems. Music streaming platform Spotify has also introduced similar measures in response to the increase in AI-generated material appearing online.

Technology companies and social media platforms are facing increasing pressure to address concerns over misleading or deceptive AI-generated content. Experts say advances in generative AI have made it harder for users to tell the difference between authentic material and computer-generated creations.

Online platforms have seen a sharp increase in AI-generated images, videos and audio clips in recent years as artificial intelligence tools become more accessible to the public. The rise of such content has raised concerns over misinformation, digital manipulation and online trust.

YouTube said the automatic labelling system would help provide viewers with more information about the type of content they are watching while allowing creators to appeal labels they believe were applied unfairly.

The company did not announce an exact date for the rollout of the automatic AI detection and flagging system, but confirmed that the feature would be introduced in future updates to the platform.
