The Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development has dismissed reports circulating on social media claiming that holders of Class 2 driver’s licences can no longer legally drive light motor vehicles. The ministry said no changes have been made to Zimbabwe’s current driver’s licence classification system.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, 4 August 2026, the ministry urged motorists not to panic, saying the Government had not announced any changes to the existing licence classes.
The clarification follows complaints from motorists on social media alleging that some traffic police officers had been arresting and fining drivers of light motor vehicles who were using Class 2 licences, insisting that they should instead hold Class 4 licences.
Responding to the reports, the ministry said the claims were false and advised members of the public not to rely on unverified information circulating online.
“The Government has not announced any changes to the current driver’s licence classes,” the ministry said.
It added: “Don’t let unverified claims cause panic. The Government has NOT announced any changes to the current driver’s licence classes — a Class 2 licence holder can still legally drive Class 4 vehicles.”
Under Zimbabwe’s current driver’s licence classification system, licence categories are based on vehicle weight. A Class 2 licence covers heavy vehicles such as trucks and lorries, while a Class 4 licence applies to light motor vehicles.
The ministry explained that the current licensing framework allows holders of higher licence classes to operate vehicles covered by lower licence classes. As a result, motorists with valid Class 2 licences are legally permitted to drive Class 4 vehicles.
The statement also urged motorists to verify information relating to Government policy through official channels rather than relying on unverified social media posts.
The ministry’s clarification comes after widespread discussion on social media over the alleged enforcement of licence requirements by some traffic police officers. The Government has maintained that the existing driver’s licence classification system remains unchanged.
