The National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) has introduced a special Rail Leisure train service on the Harare–Mutare route, timed to coincide with the 18th edition of the Sanganai/Hlanganani/Kumbanayi Tourism Expo.

The new service, launched under the theme “Devolving Sustainable Tourism Development—Our Future”, is being run in partnership with the Ministry of Tourism and Hospitality Industry (MoTHI) and the Zimbabwe Tourism Authority (ZTA).

According to NRZ, the train has the capacity to carry 243 passengers. The coaches, currently undergoing refurbishment at the Bulawayo mechanical workshops, are being prepared specifically for this service. Officials say the Harare–Mutare railway line has been fully rehabilitated to ensure smooth travel and to showcase scenic views of Zimbabwe’s natural landscapes.

The inaugural luxury train ride will depart Harare on September 5 at 0700hrs. A second departure will take place on September 7, with the final trip to Mutare scheduled for September 9. Return journeys from Mutare to Harare are set for September 6 and 8, also departing at 0700hrs.

In addition, NRZ has confirmed an overnight return trip from Mutare to Harare on September 12, leaving at 2000hrs. No trains will operate on September 10 and 11, as these days have been reserved for excursions within Mutare.

NRZ officials said the service will not only provide passengers with luxury rail travel but will also create opportunities for local, regional, and international exhibitors, buyers, and media attending the tourism expo. Entertainment and refreshments will be offered on board to enhance the passenger experience.

“The fare for each trip is set at $60 one way, making this an affordable and convenient option for all,” NRZ said in a statement. “While this undertaking is specifically tailored for the event, the NRZ will explore further collaborations in the aftermath of the expo.”

The initiative is expected to promote tourism and offer both Zimbabweans and international visitors a chance to experience rail leisure travel while engaging with the country’s cultural and natural attractions.
