WhatsApp has started rolling out a new in-chat search button to iPhone users, giving people a faster way to find specific messages without navigating through the chat information screen.
The new shortcut follows several weeks of testing on the iOS beta version of the messaging application.
Previously, iPhone users who wanted to search for a message inside a conversation had to tap the contact or group name at the top of the screen, open the chat information page and select the search option.
WhatsApp would then return users to the conversation with search mode activated.
The new shortcut removes those extra steps by allowing users to start a search directly from the conversation.
According to WhatsApp feature tracker WABetaInfo, the new search button appears at the top of the chat screen when users scroll upwards through a conversation. It is positioned below the navigation bar.
The button is designed to appear only when it is useful. When users scroll back down to the latest messages, the search shortcut disappears.
Users who see the button can tap it to activate the existing search interface. They can then enter a keyword to find matching messages within the conversation.
The underlying search function has not been significantly changed. Instead, WhatsApp is providing a quicker way to access a tool that already exists.
The shortcut is being made available across individual chats and group conversations. WABetaInfo also reports that it is supported in WhatsApp Channels, allowing users to search for older channel updates without first opening the channel information screen.
The feature could be particularly useful in conversations containing large numbers of messages, where manually scrolling through the chat to locate an older message can take considerable time.
WhatsApp initially tested the search shortcut in a different position. During the earlier beta testing, the button appeared at the bottom of the screen when users scrolled upwards.
Before the public rollout, WhatsApp moved the shortcut to the top of the screen. The change places it below the navigation bar and avoids a potential clash with other controls displayed at the bottom of the conversation.
WABetaInfo identified the feature in WhatsApp Messenger for iOS version 26.36.74, which is available through the App Store. However, the feature is being rolled out gradually rather than becoming available to every iPhone user at once.
This means installing the latest WhatsApp update does not necessarily guarantee that the new search button will immediately appear.
WhatsApp has not indicated that users need to activate a separate setting to use the feature. For accounts included in the rollout, the shortcut should appear automatically when scrolling upwards through a supported chat or channel.
The update is another small change aimed at reducing the number of steps required to perform common tasks inside WhatsApp.
For users who frequently search for addresses, names, links, documents, dates or other information buried in older conversations, the shortcut provides a more direct route to WhatsApp’s existing search tool.
The gradual rollout means users who do not see the button yet may need to wait until the feature reaches their account.
For now, the new shortcut is focused on making message searches easier rather than introducing a completely new search system.
As WhatsApp continues distributing the feature, more iPhone users are expected to gain access to the shortcut in the coming weeks.
